How to Use ColorShells: Step-by-Step Guide

Whether you’re new to ColorShells or looking to refine your technique, these step-by-step tips will help you get the most out of every application. Developed over 20 years of salon experience, these methods work with any color or lightener you already use — the only thing that changes is what holds the hair.

Step 1

Isolate and Weave the Section

Take a clean, thin horizontal section as you would for a traditional foil. Weave or slice the hair precisely, then position the open ColorShell directly underneath the hair, keeping it as flush to the scalp as possible.

Step 2

Secure the Shell at the Scalp

Gently slide the lower plate of the shell upward until it sits snug against the head. Use your non-dominant hand to hold the hair taut and centered within the shell to prevent it from shifting during application.

Step 3

Saturated Application at the Base

Holding the shell steady, use your tint brush to apply color or lightener right at the root area. Make sure you get a clean line at the top of the shell, ensuring the product saturates the “new growth” thoroughly without bleeding.

Step 4

Extend Product Through the Lengths

Continue painting the product down the hair shaft, using the rigid shell as a firm surface to work against. Use the tip of your brush or a comb to spread the hair evenly across the plate so every strand is fully coated.

Step 5

Close and Secure the Shell

Once the section is fully saturated, fold the top half of the ColorShell over to enclose the hair. Press firmly to lock it; you might find it helpful to use a small clip near the scalp if you’re working with very thick sections or need extra security.

Step 6

Organize the Placement Pattern

Work through your sections methodically, stacking the shells as you move up the head. Because they are clear and structured, you can easily see your previous placement to ensure perfect spacing and symmetry.

Step 7

Monitor the Full Application

Once the head is complete, do a final walkthrough to ensure all shells are locked and the guest is comfortable. The clear plastic allows you to monitor the lifting process in real-time across the entire head without ever having to “peek” and disturb the sections.
